Gorch Fock back in Kiel - The odyssey's final act....

It's done. After more than 2,200 days in the shipyard, the German Navy's training sailing ship, the Gorch Fock, has returned to its traditional berth in its home harbour - and the pier now also bears the name of the poet Rudolf Kinau, alias "Gorch Fock". The ship, repeatedly derided in many media as a "ship of fools, a three-masted circus, a million-dollar grave", has officially ended its shipyard phase and is once again available to the German Navy as a training and representation platform. Following the handover in Wilhelmshaven on World Maritime Day, which took place in a small, high-ranking ceremony, the Gorch Fock met with Vice Admiral Karsten Stawitzky, Head of the Armaments Department of the BMVg and...

First container ship refuelled with SNG

On 29 September 2021, the first commercial container ship was refuelled with CO2-neutral synthetic LNG in Brunsbüttel. This makes the "ElbBLUE", owned by the German shipping company Elbdeich and registered in Limassol, the first ship in the world to run on synthetic natural gas (SNG). Built in China in 2012, the container ship is 153 metres long and has a displacement of 13,200 tonnes and can transport 1,036 containers. Originally powered by heavy fuel oil, the MAN 8L48/60B diesel engine from MAN Energy Solutions was converted to the MAN 51/60DF four-stroke engine in 2017. At the time, the ship was still called the "Wes Amelie" and attracted international attention with its drive unit. The so-called multi-fuel engine enables the use of...

Young talent concerns in the UK

Retired frigate captain James Bond back in active service Who doesn't know it these days, whether fire brigade, police or armed forces: the competition for bright minds and nimble hands is in full swing. The German Armed Forces have been recruiting in many different ways, including here in Germany, e.g. with the digital careers fair in September: marineforum.online/mission-marine Our friends in the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Airforce, regardless of Brexit, are also facing a recruitment crisis. The number of British soldiers has fallen for the tenth year in a row. In the Army alone, there is a shortfall of 7,000 soldiers, while in the Royal Navy, according to unofficial...

New names at the Kiel naval base

Tirpitzhafen is now called Kiel naval base. The southern outer pier will be called Gorch-Fock-Mole and the outer pier will become Oskar-Kusch-Mole. The background to this new naming has already been discussed here in marineforum.online - now it is official and will be implemented. Based on the Bundeswehr's 2017 decree on tradition, it has been instructed that in future only the Bundeswehr's own 65-year history will apply to the line of tradition. In addition, places and people from the resistance against terror and tyranny are also included. This reorganisation means that the previous namesakes, Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz (1849 - 1930; founder of the High Seas Fleet in the German Empire) and Admiral Reinhard Scheer...
