Five in one go

Splashing out instead of splashing out! On 5 November, the Bangladesh Navy commissioned five ships in one go at its Chattogram base in Chittagong. In addition to the two JIANGWEI-II class frigates (Type 053H3) taken over from China, the newbuild corvette PROTASHA of the SHADHINOTA class, which was built in Wuhan, was also given its flag, colours and banner. The two frigates, which are actually just over twenty years old, were contracted in June 2018, overhauled in China and transferred to the Bay of Bengal a year ago with their no longer quite so new weapon systems - they now bear the names UMAR FAROOQ and ABU UBAIDAH. Commander ... of an aircraft carrier!

While Corvette Captain Gilda Prüß became the first woman to hold the position of chief officer on a German Navy frigate last year (see MarineForum 12-2020 page 45), America is already a few steps ahead. Shortly before Christmas, the US Navy proudly announced that a woman will take command of the aircraft carrier USS "Abraham Lincoln" next summer. With their 85 aircraft, the 332-metre-long ships form the combat-ready backbone of the fleet. The "Abraham Lincoln"...

On the way to operational readiness

After the Breguet Atlantic was discontinued, the German Navy opted for second-hand P-3Cs from the Dutch. France, on the other hand, decided to develop its own successor, the Atlantic 2. Also known as the Atlantic Nouvelle Generation (ANG), these maritime patrol aircraft differed from their predecessors only in the details. However, after 20 years in service, the technical equipment was no longer up to date and the decision was made to upgrade in 1993. Just under two years ago, the first of the converted aircraft rejoined the fleet. On the way to their planned retirement at the end of 2021...

Welcome home, frigate "Hamburg"!

The frigate "Hamburg" has been back from the Mediterranean since 20 December 2020. Since the beginning of August, the ship had taken over the second operational contingent of the European Union's Irini foreign mission. Over the past few months, the frigate's main task was to contribute to the implementation of the arms embargo imposed on Libya by the United Nations Security Council. "As the first German seagoing unit of the still young Operation Irini, we have succeeded in making a visible and significant contribution to stabilisation in the sea area off Libya. In August of this year, nobody knew what was in store for us. Now we can look back on the proud...

Annual instruction of the Navy 2021

The inspector draws up this policy document on a regular basis, but the directive for 2021 is characterised by unusual circumstances. "The side effects and consequences of the COVID-19 coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic have permanently shaken much of what was considered safe and plannable at the beginning of last year," says Krause. The Bundeswehr, and therefore the Navy, will foreseeably also be affected by the consequences - while the scope and intensity of the challenges facing the armed forces will continue to increase.
