Maritime trade: two bottlenecks with influence

International trade drives the global economy and is responsible for around 80 % of global goods transport by sea. Access to the two most important canals, the Panama and Suez Canals, is fundamental for uninterrupted supply chains and therefore also for economic growth. Current disruptions show the vulnerability of these important shipping routes. Suez Canal The French Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez completed this shipping link in 1869. It connects the Mediterranean with the Red Sea and became the fastest and most economical route between Europe and Asia. Around 30 % of global container traffic, i.e. up to 15 % of global trade, passes through this waterway and generates...

European states agree to protect North Sea infrastructure

Six countries bordering the North Sea signed an agreement on 9 April to jointly protect the underwater infrastructure from possible (Russian) attacks. The signatories include Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the UK, Norway and the Netherlands - only France is missing. The North Sea is Europe's powerhouse, boosting renewable energy ambitions and helping to increase energy security on the continent and in the UK. Following the explosions on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in September 2022 and the sabotaged submarine cables also in the Baltic Sea, the infrastructure in the North Sea has also been declared a security priority....

Frigate "Hessen", the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden - a brief look back.

The German frigate "Hessen" is on its way home to Wilhelmshaven. She has completed her deployment in the EU-led Operation ASPIDES to protect civilian shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, a sea area threatened by drone and missile attacks, without suffering any serious damage. Until the redeeming "Air Warning White" after passing the Suez Canal heading north-west, in simple terms the withdrawal of the frigate's full air defence combat readiness, it was - including the breaks for resupply and ammunition replenishment in Djibouti - a good 56 days in the area of operations. "Back home", high and dry, we were bombarded with questions about the threat, weapons deployment...

Q126: Maybe six after all - instead of four?

In mid-April, the Bloomberg news agency reported on plans to trigger the option for two more new German F126 frigate builds, although it was referring to insider information. However, as it has not yet been possible to find anything to the contrary from the German side either, here is the Bloomberg report published on SWZ Maritime (Netherlands) in a German rephrasing with admittedly sparse background information. Even if "once again" there is nothing for the navy - there was unexpectedly little left over for the navy in the 100 billion turnaround package - this information should not remain hidden! Background Damen Naval is currently working on an order for four frigates of the...
