Old wine in new bottles: faster procurement?

In May 2022, it became known that the Ministry of Defence was working on a draft law to accelerate procurement measures of the German Armed Forces - "in short" the Bundeswehr Procurement Acceleration Act (BwBBG) - and, as the smooth name suggests, the law is intended to "apply facilitations under public procurement law to accelerate the awarding of public contracts", according to a formulation aid from the Federal Government. Observers of the scene quickly recognised that the demands formulated in the draft law essentially provide for the implementation of existing and long-known options - particularly with regard to the public procurement chamber and exemptions from the Competition Act. The Federal Association of the German Security and Defence Industry rightly asked why the "planned increased...

If you ever ask me about it!

A non-binding explanation to the frequently asked question as to why it is not possible to determine at the touch of a button which ship has been where and when in a limited sea area such as the Baltic Sea - i.e. to carry out area-wide monitoring? Let's start with something fundamental: the Baltic Sea is not China! And under normal circumstances, there is no need to monitor everything, permanently and seamlessly! Update on the gas leakage situation at Nord Stream 1/2 - Possible end to the gas leak on Sunday, 2 October

Update 02.10.2022 - 17:00 According to a Twitter post by the Danish energy agency Energistyrelsen on Sunday at 12.42 pm, gas is no longer leaking from either Nord Stream pipeline. The agency is referring to the operating company. Whether and how reconnaissance missions confirm this is not known here. It is possible that this information relates to the twin pipe of Nord Stream 2. In contrast, the Swedish Coast Guard reported no change to yesterday's situation in a communiqué issued at 4.04 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. During overflights on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and again at 1 p.m., the diameters of the gas bubble fields were still around 100 metres at the larger exit point and 15 metres...

Sea battalion under new leadership

On Tuesday, 27 September 2022 at 2 p.m., the commander of Operational Flotilla 1, Flotilla Admiral Henning Faltin (56), handed over command of the naval battalion from Frigate Captain Norman Bronsch (41) to Frigate Captain Patrick Steinbach (41). Over the past two years, Frigate Captain Bronsch has led the soldiers of the sea battalion through a wide range of activities and projects, to which he has actively added his personal touch. However, his time in command was also very much characterised by the Covid-19 pandemic - and thus always associated with the question of how the operational capability and morale of the sea battalion could be kept as high as possible during the pandemic. During his time as...
