ABB DC power supply for F126

Damen Naval and ABB (a Swedish-Swiss technology company) have signed a contract for the supply of transformers, generators, thruster motors and other onboard systems for the F126 frigates. This also includes cybersecurity solutions for the four frigates with an option for two more. This is a significant change in the way tomorrow's naval vessels will not only fulfil increasingly complex requirements, but also meet emissions expectations. For multi-mission capable vessels, a DC system allows the diesel generators to operate at variable speed depending on power. The robustness of the direct current network will enable the German Navy to use as few diesel generators as possible, without having to reduce...

Bremen march

Why is marching a topic for a maritime forum? This is the eighth time that the Bremen state command and the Bremen regional group of the Association of German Armed Forces Reservists (VdRBw) have organised the "Bremen March". Due to the corona pandemic, the march was organised as a remotemarch in the last two years, and the 50 or so reservists taking part will be able to set off together again on 21 May 2022. The 24-kilometre-long...

Hypersonic weapons: Plans of the USA

US Naval Institute: Report to Congress on the Procurement and Development of Hypersonic Weapons The United States has actively pursued the development of hypersonic weapons - manoeuvring weapons that fly at speeds of at least Mach 5 - since the early 2000s as part of its programme for conventional, rapid global attack. In recent years, the focus has been on the development of hypersonic glide missiles launched from a rocket and hypersonic cruise missiles propelled in flight by high-speed engines. As the former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Commander of the US Strategic Command, General John Hyten, explained, these missiles could...

"Think operationally, lead tactically"

German Navy ready for multinational command tasks for national and alliance defence On 17 May 2022 between 1 and 3 p.m., there will be a rare opportunity to look over the shoulder of the DEU MARFOR ("German Maritime Forces Staff") command staff in their situation centre to take a closer look at their mission and tasks. In this context, both the Admiralty and the functional personnel are available to answer questions. The "Griffin Marker 2022" exercise with 200 participants from 14 nations is coming to an end at the future naval command centre. This is an important milestone for DEU MARFOR towards certification as a maritime headquarters by NATO. The aim is...
