DB Schenker: Electric - Autonomous - Emission-free

DB Schenker is planning an electrically powered autonomous coastal container feeder in Norway. Two-way data communication solution between ship and coastal control centre will revolutionise the sea freight sector. Plans to operate a zero-emission coastal container feeder vessel between Ikornnes Quay and the port of Ålesund in Norway were recently unveiled. The autonomous and all-electric vessel will utilise Naval Dynamics' NDS AutoBarge 250 concept, developed in collaboration with Kongsberg and Massterly. With the signing of the preliminary study contract, DB Schenker and its co-operation partners - furniture giant Ekornes and ship designers Naval Dynamics, Kongsberg and Massterly - have taken the first steps towards replacing the traditional feeder vessels used in this Norwegian port....

Half a billion euros for "Polarstern II"

The "Polarstern I" is to be replaced in 2027. The Bundestag has cleared the way for the construction of the research vessel "Polarstern II", which has been particularly eagerly awaited by the German shipbuilding industry. The Budget Committee approved additional funds so that the major project, which is important for climate protection research, can be put out to tender. The new ship is due to replace the ageing "Polarstern" in 2027. The ship drifted in the ice around the North Pole for a year in 2019/20 while scientists from many countries researched the effects of climate change. German shipyards have been waiting years for the lucrative order for the "Polarstern II". However, the order has to be put out to tender across Europe. Planning for the new build has been underway since 2012, but...

Naval task force supplier: iMERZ in sight

What began optimistically in September 2019 in terms of scheduling now seems to be slowly coming to an end. Two years late, the new integrated Marine Emergency Rescue Centre (iMERZ) was transferred to its platform, the Einsatzgruppenversorger (EGV) "Frankfurt am Main", on 23 May. Construction of the rescue centre, which was designed as a permanent deckhouse, began in September 2019. The plans at the time assumed that the centre would be integrated on the "Frankfurt am Main" in spring 2020. The iMERZ is essentially a complete hospital, consisting of an infirmary, two operating theatres, an X-ray room, a dental technology department and various laboratories. Accordingly, it is designed as a permanent deckhouse...

Port of Rotterdam plans autonomous floating fire extinguishers

The Port of Rotterdam has conducted a market survey on the use of autonomous/remote-controlled floating firefighting equipment. If the information received confirms that such vessels are a good option, this could lead to a tendering process. The Port of Rotterdam operates a fleet of patrol and civil protection vessels that are deployed by the Harbour Master's Office in day, half and full-time shifts to perform management, inspection and civil protection tasks. The fleet also includes hydrographic survey vessels and an emergency response vessel. As part of the market survey, the port is asking operators for their opinion on the possibilities for autonomous/remote-controlled floating firefighting equipment. Autonomous vessels would both reduce risk, as people could be rescued from...
