Summer visit to the polar bears

While the thermometers in Central Europe are showing summer heat, the British research vessel Protector has set an icy record. Never before has a Royal Navy ship travelled further north than 80° 41.5' N. To be fair, this does not include submarines, which pass under the perpetual ice and then break through the ice cover when they surface at a suitable point. The Protector has now come within 1050 kilometres of the North Pole to collect data on the ocean and the environment. It was a long way to get there, as the research vessel had not travelled to the...

Hapag-Lloyd orders further container giants

Hapag-Lloyd has commissioned the Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to build six ships with a slot capacity of more than 23,500 TEU. The first of the newbuilds are to be delivered as early as 2024. The container liner shipping company had already placed an identical order at the end of 2020. In total, the fleet will therefore be expanded by twelve ships with more than 23,500 TEU in the coming years. The large container ships will be equipped with a modern and particularly efficient high-pressure dual-fuel engine that runs on LNG. Alternatively, there will be sufficient tank capacity on board to also run on conventional fuel. Hapag-Lloyd is focussing on liquefied natural gas as a medium-term...

Defence Commissioner Eva Högl visits naval memorial

Yesterday, Dr Eva Högl, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, crossed the Kiel Fjord from Kiel Naval Base in a German Navy pinnace in the direction of Laboe to visit the naval memorial there. After an official welcome by Heinz Maurus, President of the German Naval Association (DMB), Högl laid a solemn wreath in the underground memorial hall. During the subsequent guided tour by DMB historian Dr Jann M. Witt, she was given a comprehensive insight into the history of the memorial and the U 995 Technical Museum. As a memorial to those of all nations who remained at sea and an official memorial to the German Navy, the U 995...

Hapag-Lloyd orders another 60,000 containers

Just a few weeks ago, Hapag-Lloyd placed a major order for 150,000 containers in China. Now the German shipping company has gone one better and ordered a further 60,000 boxes. The first units are to be delivered as early as July, thus at least partially eliminating the current shortage. The reasons for the lack of a sufficient number of containers lie in the unexpectedly strong increase in demand for products from Asia, which are mostly shipped to Europe and America by container. In addition, there is an imbalance between imports and exports in Europe, which means that empty boxes also have to be sent to Asia by ship. Besides...

Economy needs SEA

The 12th National Maritime Conference starts today in Rostock-Warnemünde This year's 12th National Maritime Conference (NMK) will be broadcast digitally from the port of Rostock-Warnemünde for the first time today and tomorrow. Federal Minister Altmaier explains: "The maritime industry is one of the main pillars of Germany as a business location and is of enormous importance for an export nation. The industry is currently being hit hard by coronavirus, but we also see the crisis as an opportunity. Climate protection and digitalisation are challenges, but they are also an incentive and the key to competitiveness in the future. We have already achieved a lot in the past two years: with the promotion of hydrogen, the introduction...
