Port of Hamburg: Western expansion

After Cosco (China) and the planned entry of MSC (Switzerland), the next investment in the port of Hamburg is apparently imminent. According to information from NDR, several large shipping companies have expressed their interest to Eurogate in participating in the major project, including at least two Asian shipping companies in addition to the French CMA CGM. New areas for container handling and two new berths for large container ships are to be created in Hamburg-Waltershof as part of the western expansion. And significantly more space so that freighters can be turned when entering the harbour. The City of Hamburg and Eurogate have been planning this port expansion for years. Day of the sea rescuers

The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) has been realising the rescue of human lives from distress at sea and dangerous situations in the German areas of the North Sea and Baltic Sea for 159 years. "Maritime Rescue Day" is held once a year on the last Sunday in July and each participating station offered its own programme on 28.07.2024. In addition, patient transports with rescue boats and, depending on availability, rescue helicopters were demonstrated. Volunteer sea rescue helpers presented themselves at information stands...

Greece sells its old tonnage

The Greeks are apparently getting out of the Russian oil transport business. The largest ship-owning nation in the world, measured by the carrying capacity of its ships, is obviously profiting more from the lucrative sale of its outdated ships, thereby enabling Moscow to circumvent sanctions at the same time. Greek shipowners are selling their depreciated tankers - mostly 15 to 20 years old - at a profit to mysterious buyers with connections to Russia. A dubious business model: keyword "shadow fleet", but not illegal; and certainly enterprising. And even the EU's 14th sanctions package against Russia from June 2024 will not take action against the shadow fleet. kdk Source:...

Athens - Shadow fleet threatens Greek islands - Update

Tankers that circumvent Western sanctions increasingly pose a risk to the Mediterranean region. Greece is now tightening protective measures for its coast and islands. It is estimated that up to 850 oil tankers make up the so-called shadow fleet. These are predominantly old ships (over 15 years old) that transport oil from countries such as Iran, Venezuela and Russia and are difficult to track due to opaque ownership, lack of or inadequate insurance, maintenance and classification (ship MOT). These oil tankers have been involved in at least 50 incidents to date, including fires, engine failures, collisions and oil spills, according to the German insurer Allianz Commercial in its 2024 annual report....
