USA - Boeing delivers maritime patrol aircraft to Germany and Canada

The US Navy has ordered a total of 17 P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft from Boeing for around 3 billion euros; 14 aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force and three more for the German Navy. Following the initial order of five aircraft in June 2021, Germany is now procuring three more for the German Navy. The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2025 and will replace the P-3 Orion fleet. Last year, Canada also announced that it would be procuring the Poseidon. Canada is thus replacing its current fleet of CP-140 Auroras. The first P-8A for Canada is expected to be delivered in 2026. The P-8A Poseidon...

Attention spotters: Goodbye Seaking

Since 1974, it has accompanied citizens in Kiel and the surrounding communities in the skies over Schleswig-Holstein, no matter what the weather was like, whether it was "imperial weather" or a typical North German storm depression. For decades, we lived with the engine noise of the "sea kings". With the relocation of Naval Air Wing 5 to Nordholz/Lower Saxony in 2012, the skies over Kiel became quiet. On 20 March 1974, the first landing of a "Seaking" took place in Kiel Holtenau. The aircraft were built by Westland in Yeovil, England, and then transferred to Germany (Kiel). They were the modernisation of the navy's search and rescue service with 23 of these highly reliable and...

Kiel loses out

Successor to the Walrus class - procurement decision in the Netherlands in favour of France It seemed to be on the cards: the French Naval Group's design has prevailed for the successor to the Walrus submarines. The decision to award the contract is provisional, as the current decision in the Council of Ministers still requires parliamentary approval. An initial briefing of the House of Representatives on the decision is planned for 27 March. The review report on the selection decision should be available in May, which will form the basis for the parliamentary debate and the final award decision. The Ministry of Defence would like to sign the contract before July, as the deadlines for the preparation of tenders will expire after that. In addition...

New boarding suit advertised

It's supposed to be more practical, but it's already chic! It came as something of a surprise to many when the Inspector of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jan-Christian Kaack, announced at the 63rd Historical-Tactical Conference of the Navy on 11 January: "This year will see the first prototype of a new combat suit - without a light blue shirt." The subsequent murmur in the hall indicated that there was probably not so much insider knowledge after all. Now it is public. Bundeswehr Bekleidungsmanagement GmbH has launched a competition for the procurement of a "Marine Clothing System". This can be read on the European online procurement platform TED on 13 February. It was reported...
