Lower Saxony: New major contracts awarded for offshore wind farm

The operators Vattenfall and BASF have now signed contracts with four companies for the planned "Nordlicht" offshore wind farm off the North Sea island of Borkum. According to the two companies, the contracts include steel foundations to be built and cables to be installed. According to Vattenfall, construction is due to start in 2026. Geesthacht - Research vessel for low-emission drives

The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) has commissioned Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven to build a new research vessel. The corresponding contract for the base ship was signed at the beginning of February 2025 and is expected to cost around 36 million euros. From completion in summer 2027, the DLR research vessel, which will be 48 metres long and carry up to 20 people, will primarily be used for one-day to multi-day test cruises on the North Sea and Baltic Sea and will be a unique laboratory for real-life experiments. It will also offer the maritime industry the opportunity to jointly develop innovative and climate-friendly energy systems and propulsion concepts based on hydrogen and batteries.

Hamburg: Fire on German warship

During the night from Monday to Tuesday, there was a fire on the reconnaissance vessel "Alster" (Oste class 423), which is currently undergoing scheduled repairs in the floating dock of the Norderwerft shipyard in Hamburg harbour. According to initial information, there was a fire in an electrical distribution box. Crew members were able to extinguish the fire quickly. The fire brigade that was called out subsequently checked the scene of the fire. The fire broke out at around 1.16 am, a fire service spokesperson told TAG24. As a precautionary measure, fire boats also travelled to the dock, but they were not needed. According to the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), there was no damage to the unit.
