Ammunition in the sea: demands and details of the government's emergency programme

From a press release by GMT, MCN and SMN On 11 April 2024, the event "Munitions in the sea - perspectives and value creation potential" took place in Rostock-Warnemünde under the organisation of the Gesellschaft für Maritime Technik e. V. (GMT), the Maritime Cluster Norddeutschland e. V. (MCN) and the Subsea Monitoring Network e. V. (SMN). Netherlands - largest floating solar plant in the world planned

The Nautical Sunrise project is an initiative of various energy companies and specialists in the fields of wind and solar energy as well as offshore floating solar (OFS) in order to close important knowledge gaps relating to the design and environmental impact of offshore solar energy. Various university departments are therefore also involved. The project of the world's largest floating offshore solar energy system was launched in December 2023, is expected to cost 8.4 million euros and is funded by the Horizon Europe research framework programme with 6.8 million euros to advance research and development of OFS and its components. This project aims to develop a floating 5 megawatt offshore solar system as a modular solution through the company SolarDuck, the Dutch-Norwegian specialist in offshore solar...

USA - Senate to ratify Convention on the Law of the Sea

An influential group of former military and political leaders has called on the US Senate to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Only then can the country assert its claim to areas in international waters where important minerals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese and rare earths will be mined in the future. These are considered crucial in the USA for the green energy transition, for military applications and to avoid falling behind in competition with China in global supply chains for critical minerals. Ratification is therefore considered essential, also in order to be credible in maritime disputes and to negotiate on an equal footing...

Methanol engines on the rise

Maritime Cluster Northern Germany presents a comprehensive market overview Methanol is well on its way to establishing itself as one of the most important fuel options alongside LNG and ammonia as well as bio-based fuels such as FAME due to its high potential for decarbonising shipping and protecting the environment. Decisions by major market players such as Maersk and X-Press Feeders to use methanol in new ships support this development. A few years ago, engines that could process methanol were virtually non-existent. Now, however, established engine manufacturers are increasingly opening up to this fuel and actively tapping into this market. In addition, there are more and more engines that are being retrofitted or are to be...

BUND calls for more protection for the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site

The German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) is calling for better protection of the Wadden Sea in the expansion of offshore wind energy and planned natural gas extraction, particularly in order to preserve the title of "UNESCO World Heritage Site". The protection of the Wadden Sea must be consistently prioritised over economic interests, as the status of the area is severely threatened by exploitation interests. In the last status report from September 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Commission declared that the extraction of raw materials was incompatible with the Wadden Sea's World Heritage status. UNESCO had therefore called on Germany and the Netherlands to refrain from oil and gas extraction in the Wadden Sea and its immediate surroundings. BUND demands...
