EU: New undersea cable in the Black Sea to bypass Russia

The European Union is planning to lay a new 1,100-kilometre-long data cable in the Black Sea in order to bypass the existing terrestrial connection (fibre optic) to Georgia, which is considered "unsafe" and "unstable" because it runs through Russia. Such a connection was already being considered before Russia's invasion of Ukraine; following Georgia's membership application at the beginning of March 2022, its planning perspective has now been significantly advanced. The Financial Times refers to a previously unpublished strategy paper from the EU Commission. Data cable The cable through the Black Sea is to be laid in international waters and cost around 45 million euros....

Bremerhaven: Construction of converter platforms?

Offshore wind farms require the energy from the wind turbine generators (alternating current) to be transported via cables under the sea and then converted to direct current on land at the point of generation - as this is significantly less lossy over long distances. This conversion takes place in very voluminous converters that are anchored deep in the ground on high stilts near the wind farms, standing above the waves. These platforms, measuring an impressive 70 x 30 x 30 metres in length/width/height, are located around 20 metres above the surface of the water and reach up to 60 metres into the ground with their anchoring. SeeElefant - maritime plastic recycling made in Germany

"One Earth - One Ocean", OEOO - a German non-profit environmental organisation - has developed its idea into a concept in 2022, in which a used cargo ship is to be converted and used as a mobile recycling and energy generation ship in remote metropolitan or waste regions. Offshore wind energy: Danish/German co-operation

Germany and Denmark have signed an agreement to jointly install at least 3 gigawatts (GW) of wind energy capacity by the early 2030s, including 2 GW for Germany. Previous plans by the northern European countries to build a joint electricity grid under the North Sea have so far always encountered financial and regulatory difficulties. Now the transmission system operators (TSOs) 50Hertz (Germany) and Energinet (Denmark) have agreed to share investments and future profits equally between Germany and Denmark, without giving financial details. Bornholm hub The Bornholm Energy Island is part of a comprehensive Danish plan to increase domestic offshore wind power production fivefold by 2030. The new wind farm on the Danish island...

Scrubbers are not environmental angels

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden have discovered that the wash water from exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) on ships is the main cause of environmental pollution in harbour areas. The environmentally hazardous metals and other toxic substances washed out of the exhaust gas are no longer released into the atmosphere, but into the water, including harbour waters. Emissions Each ship is responsible for various types of pollutant discharges. These include grey water from showers, black water from toilets, antifouling paints and exhaust gases from ship propulsion systems. Standards In order to meet the requirements in the European Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECA) and the requirements introduced by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 2020, it is necessary to...
