The commander in Kiel will change on Friday, 15 November 2024
Flotilla Admiral Sascha Helge Rackwitz is leaving, Flotilla Admiral Christian Walter Meyer is coming! Flotilla Admiral Rackwitz has been Commander of Operational Flotilla 1 since January 2022 and is also Director of the Competence Centre for Operations in Coastal Waters. He will now swap the office with a view of the Kiel Fjord for an office on the Spree. In future, he will be working as office manager for the Inspector General. He says: "My time as KD1 was unfortunately shorter than I would have hoped, but very intensive. It was a great honour for me to lead the flotilla during this challenging time. The hard work, commitment and great camaraderie in this unique organisation inspired me every day. There is still a great deal to do, but together we have done a lot to lead the flotilla into the new era, even against the odds. The challenges we face are immense - but the navy and our allies can rely unconditionally on the men and women of Flotilla 1, whether ashore, at sea or below. The handover will be carried out by Rear Admiral Stefan Haisch, Commander Naval Forces.
Flotilla Admiral Meyer is moving from the naval command in Rostock to Kiel. "I'm really looking forward to the new task. It's 'like coming home', it brings me back to my service roots and closer to the troops. It also gives me the chance to play a direct role in the operational readiness of the fleet. And this in a flotilla that has always been characterised by a creative spirit and a willingness to try out new things. But I also approach this task with great respect, because the Baltic Sea region in particular brings with it challenges that demand a lot from the flotilla and its units in a short space of time. I consider it a great privilege to be given command of Flotilla 1 in such a phase," says the designated commander, who, as a former speedboat driver, is very familiar with the conditions in the Baltic Sea.
