Soldiers from the Dutch Corps Mariniers from Aruba and St. Maarten have been training together with American Marines. To this end, they were hosted by II Marine Expeditionary Forces in North Carolina for the Carribean Urban Warrior 21 exercise. Over a period of three weeks, they had the opportunity to refresh and expand their knowledge in the unique training environment of Camp Lejeune. They practised with aircraft and helicopters in a realistic replica of a city.
"The different environment brought with it completely new challenges," analysed Captain Mark Brouwer, Dutch exchange officer in the United States. "Think of the interoperability of communication systems and the exchange of information between command structures."
The Dutch and American marines train several times a year. This is not only intended to strengthen military relations between the two countries, but also serves as an exchange of experience. "It's instructive to train with partners. They always hold up a mirror to you," says Brouwer.
