At the cabinet meeting on 18 January 2023, Dieter Janecek was confirmed as the new Federal Government Coordinator for Maritime Economy and Tourism. He succeeds Claudia Müller, who moved to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture as Parliamentary State Secretary on 1 January.
In an initial statement, Dieter Janecek commented on the maritime industry: "Economy and ecology belong together. Germany has set itself ambitious goals with regard to climate neutrality. I would like to support the maritime industry and the tourism industry in achieving these goals and remaining competitive at the same time. SMEs are central to this: They need to be taken on board, skilled workers need to be secured, digitalisation needs to be driven forward and energy costs need to be kept in check. With regard to the maritime industry, it is above all innovative solutions for the decarbonisation of maritime shipping that we need to drive forward. I also see the maritime industry as an important player and actor that we need for the development of production capacities for offshore wind expansion. The National Maritime Conference in Bremen in September will be an important milestone for these issues."
Born in Pirmasens in 1976, the father of three children has a degree in political science. From 2001 to 2003, he worked as a PR consultant, then until 2005 as an internal communications officer for the Green Party in Bavaria. He was state chairman of the Greens there from 2008 to 2014. He has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013. According to a press release from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, Dieter Janecek "stands for socio-ecological transformation and has overseen and driven forward the areas of industrial policy, energy and resource efficiency and mobility, among others."
