The three ships were built in quick succession by the Norwegians (United European Car Carriers, UECC) at the Jiangnan shipyard in China. The launching of construction number H 2665 took place on 28 December, just seven months after the keel was laid and follows the recent final delivery of the first newbuilding, named AUTO ADVANCE, the second and third of which are due to be delivered in the first half of this year.
UECC is thus fulfilling its promise to expand its low-emission fleet in order to become an environmentally friendly short sea shipping company in Europe with these ships. Of course, this programme by the shipping company, which has often attracted attention with innovative concepts, is not entirely selfless. After all, low-emission concepts save a lot of port charges and, as a car transporter, it is difficult to drive electric cars across Europe without being asked by the manufacturer whether propulsion with conventional fuels still fits in with the business model. We have known that it is good for the image since 2019, when the shipping company received the Bremen "Green Shipping Award".
CEO Glenn Edvardsen also recognised the shipyard's efforts in overcoming logistical challenges such as supply chain and personnel capacities, which were primarily caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
While the first newbuild is already in operation, the second newbuild is currently being finalised. When all three vessels are delivered, UECC will have a total of five environmentally friendly PCTCs in its fleet of nine vessels. The innovative use of battery hybrid technology in combination with a dual-fuel solution on the latest newbuilds should enable these vessels to meet the IMO's target of reducing carbon intensity by 40 % by 2030 compared to 2008 levels.
Carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by around 25 %, SOx and particulate emissions by 90 % and NOx emissions by 85 % through the use of LNG. UECC has also experimented with low-carbon fuels such as biofuel on its existing PCTC AUTOSKY, marineforum reported on 14 April 21 on "Seafaring with frying fat".
