From a press release by the PIZ at Rostock Naval Command:
On Friday, 29 September 2023, Flotilla Admiral Stephan Haisch (56), Commander Operational Forces and Head of the Operations Department of the Naval Command, will hand over command of the Naval Damage Control Training Centre (EAZS M) from Captain Eckardt Menzel (62) to Frigate Captain Jörg Mascow (54) at the Neustadt i.H. Naval Barracks.
After 43 years and one month in the military, including the last six years as commander in Neustadt, Captain Menzel is now retiring. But before that, he is handing over leadership to his successor. According to the motto: "It's not ships that fight, but people", people have always been at the centre of attention for the incumbent commander. Menzel is particularly proud of the cooperation between the various departments in the Neustadt barracks, without which the coronavirus pandemic could not have been handled so well. "The outstanding training at the EAZS M is guaranteed by the instructors who, based on their own experience on board, ensure high-quality and flexible training with great dedication and personal commitment, and have also been doing so for other NATO navies for several years."
Frigate Captain Mascow, a highly experienced naval officer, is taking command of the training centre. "I look forward to the task ahead of me as commander of the operational training centre with great expectation, but also with respect. First and foremost, I am looking forward to working with the highly motivated Neustadt team in a spirit of trust," says Mascow. With his previous assignments as boat and ship commander, he is ideally positioned for his new role. "I would like to thank my predecessor, Captain Menzel, who handed over a very well-functioning training organisation to me and, above all, wish him good health for his upcoming 'retirement'."
