Ecuador's important new arrival from South Korea

The coast guard vessel "Jambelí" (MP 56) was handed over to the Armada del Ecuador in South Korea at the beginning of April. The former Korea Coast Guard Salvage Ship "Tae Pyung Yang I" (105 metres, 4,400 tonnes) was handed over to Ecuador in 2024 by bilateral agreement and subsequently dismantled in South Korea as an OPV.

Once it arrives in South America, it will also be able to take up its duties as a deep-sea guard ship to secure Ecuador's coastal waters, ensure compliance with environmental standards and combat drug smuggling by sea. Even though the ship is a good 30 years old, it will be Ecuador's largest ship in terms of tonnage and, with its technical equipment, will be able to maintain its presence and thus provide good service internationally.
