General Alexander Richard David Shirreff, who gave a lecture at the Royal Academy of War Sciences in Sweden, gave a clear message about where he believes the Kremlin is heading - namely the Baltic states.
The danger of war in the Baltic states is real, said the Briton, the former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, in an exclusive interview with the Swedish television channel SVT. Shirreff made it clear where he believes the Kremlin is heading - and that could be the Baltic states.
"It is tangible. Putin's intention was clear from the beginning, after all, he has said that the best security solution for Europe is a new Yalta, which I interpret to mean that he wants to restore Russian rule in the former republics of the Soviet Union, and as we know, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are former republics of the Soviet Union," he said. He warned of the danger, pointing out that there were significant Russian-speaking minorities in at least two of these countries. He was referring to Estonia and Latvia. There is a danger that Putin wants to unite all Russians under the banner of "Mother Russia", said Shirreff. The general did not rule out a Russian invasion of Poland or other Eastern European countries.
"If you look at it from a broader perspective, all Eastern European countries that were once part of the Warsaw Pact and are now part of NATO are under threat. NATO must therefore be prepared to repel any form of attack on a NATO member state," he added.
