For five generations, the Fassmer shipyard in Berne has been a successful and internationally recognised shipbuilding company and a fascinating example of entrepreneurial perseverance, technical innovation and family continuity.

The history of the shipyard begins in 1850 with the boat builder Johannes Fassmer. Founded as a one-man business in Berne-Bardenfleth in the district of Wesermarsch in Lower Saxony, he initially built small wooden boats and lifeboats for various companies in the area. When his son Friedrich joined the boatyard around 1880, larger orders led to expansion, and at the end of the 19th century a second shipyard shed was built and modern machinery purchased.
