Frigate "Sachsen-Anhalt" leaves home port for UNIFIL mission

On 25 August 2025 at 10 a.m., the frigate "Sachsen-Anhalt" will set sail off the Lebanese coast for the mandated foreign mission UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon).

The crew, under the command of frigate captain Daniel Läzer, will carry out maritime surveillance and training for the Lebanese navy off the Lebanese coast until the end of January next year as part of the UNIFIL mission.

The "Sachsen-Anhalt" leaves Wilhelmshaven with around 150 servicemen and women. The frigate's regular crew is supported by a shipboard deployment team from the shipboard deployment company in Eckernförde and a group of dentists.

Frigate class F125

With the Baden-Württemberg-class frigates, the navy has a total of four of a type of frigate designed from scratch specifically for stabilisation missions and developed from German operational experience over the past decades. The range of tasks of the F125 class primarily includes maritime surveillance in crisis regions worldwide, such as missions for embargo controls or anti-piracy operations.

UNIFIL:

The core task of the marines is maritime surveillance. In addition to the German blue helmets, ships and boats from Greece, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Turkey are also involved in the UN mission in the Mediterranean. The tasks also include cooperating with the Lebanese authorities and training the Lebanese navy in coastal defence.
