September is the month of the major exercises Quadriga and Northern Coast
From 18 August to 30 September 2025, the Bundeswehr and 13 partner nations will be conducting a large-scale exercise to protect the Baltic Sea region. Up to 8,400 soldiers from various branches of the armed forces will be deployed. Quadriga 2025 serves to strengthen military capabilities, leadership and multinational cooperation in the Baltic Sea regionto increase the ability to react in the event of a crisis and to ensure the defence of the NATO alliance area. Extensive logistical challenges have to be overcome in order to establish this operational readiness. The exercise involves the complex deployment and supply of armoured forces and equipment by sea and land in order to test the mobility and sustainability of the armed forces. In addition to deployment exercises, the Quadriga 2025 exercise also includes combat exercises with the participation of the partner nations Denmark, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the USA in order to strengthen defence in the Baltic Sea region.
Key role of the Northern Coasts naval manoeuvre: From 1 to 12 September 2025, the Northern Coasts naval exercise will take place in the Baltic Sea under German command, during which maritime capabilities for national and alliance defence as well as presence will be demonstrated.
As Commander Task Force Baltic, Rear Admiral Stephan Haisch leads the international naval organisation: "With Northern Coasts as a focal point exercise, Quadriga 2025 underlines the will and determination to defend the NATO alliance area, especially the maritime Baltic Sea region."
"We are pursuing the goal of strengthening the cooperation and military capabilities of the navies in the Baltic Sea. In doing so, we are consistently focussing on realistic threat scenarios from all dimensions: Air, land, water and also cyber. This practical training is intended to increase the ability to react and deploy in the event of a crisis or conflict and also to further develop the leadership capability and cooperation between my staff and the partner navies. We are also part of the so-called training audience during this year's iteration of Northern Coasts and are using the exercise to certify our operational readiness, the Full Operational Capability," Rear Admiral Haisch emphasises further.
Surface and underwater units as well as naval aviators and naval security forces are deployed for the German Navy. The multinational naval organisation consists of a total of around 8,400 soldiers and around 40 units from 14 nations.
