The threat posed by a growing number of submarines is increasing worldwide. This has prompted European and American manufacturers to develop a new generation of heavyweight torpedoes.

The Black Shark Advanced (BSA) is the latest generation of heavyweight torpedoes from Italian manufacturer Leonardo. It is in service with the Chilean, Portuguese, Malaysian and an unnamed Southeast Asian navy, which according to media reports is the Republic of Singapore. It has also recently been deployed by the Indonesian navy. Their three boats of the modified Jang Bogo class of type 209 were supplied by the South Korean company DSME. The BSA is also being offered for the Indian Navy's procurement programme to equip the Scorpene P 75 and future boats with new-generation heavyweight torpedoes, among other things.
