India's maritime investment offensive - 35 Indian companies at SMM

India is comprehensively modernising its maritime infrastructure - from ports and shipyards to digital and sustainable technologies. These developments are opening up international market opportunities, which will also be visible at SMM 2026. Programmes such as the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision aim to make India one of the top 5 shipbuilding nations by 2045. Chancellor Merz Photo Bundestag

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited India on 12 January 2026 to expand bilateral cooperation. The visit served to strengthen economic, security and geopolitical relations between Germany and India. Both sides signed 27 declarations of intent, including on critical raw materials, artificial intelligence, defence cooperation and a possible free trade agreement. The visit also sends a strategic signal to China that Germany is diversifying its partnerships.

The SMM will take place in Hamburg from 1 to 4 September 2026.
