A section of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea at least 50 metres long is missing, the Swedish daily Expressen reported on Tuesday after taking what it said were the first publicly published pictures of the damage. Swedish police and prosecutors suspect that the leaks that occurred on Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 on 26 September were caused by deliberate underwater explosions and are investigating the case as an act of gross sabotage.
The video from Expressen, which was made using an unmanned underwater vehicle, shows bent metal and a wide-open pipeline at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Parts of the pipeline are deformed, as the footage taken at a depth of around 80 metres shows. The video was allegedly filmed by Expressen journalists on Monday. The reported agency Reuters was unable to verify whether the published images originate from Nord Stream 1.
Swedish journalists had received permission. The Swedish security authorities confiscated material on site. The Swedish navy and the security police did not comment.
