Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack receives France's highest-ranking honour, "Officier de la Légion d'Honneur"
Yesterday evening on the sail training ship "Gortch Fock": the Chief of Staff of the French Navy, Admiral Nicolas Vaujour, presented his German comrade with the impressive medal.
The decision as to who is awarded the Legion of Honour is made by the current French President. Manuel Macron is the current Grand Master (Grand Maître) of the Legion of Honour. Kaack's achievements in the German Navy and as inspector of the German Navy and his commitment to Franco-German cooperation were honoured. France's highest-ranking award was established on 19 May 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, then still First Consul, in recognition of military and civilian merit. Since its foundation, the Legion of Honour has been awarded to French and non-French nationals. Among the first Germans to be admitted to the Legion of Honour was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, to whom Napoleon personally pinned the insignia of a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1808.
The recipients of the honour form a community which is presided over by the President of the Republic. The decision as to who is awarded the Legion of Honour is made solely by the President of France, who is also the current President of the Republic.
