#Knowledge Round 1: Sailor Sunday

From now on, we would like to help you fall asleep smarter on Thursdays. Why on Thursdays? We don't sail on Fridays and we have time for this due to the harbour routine. But perhaps it's also so that you can lead the table on Sailor's Sunday with your knowledge of the subject? The truth is probably somewhere in between, but it's only fitting that we start our series in 2021 with the history of the Seamen's Sunday.

#Knowledge Round 1 Sailor Sunday

The first documented mention of the Seamen's Sunday 1727 in the Hamburg Article Letters.

Legend has it that sailors had slightly more tickets on Thursdays, as no sailing ship was supposed to leave a harbour on Fridays due to the fear of accidents.

According to another legend, however, the sailors were simply smart - they wanted to shorten the week at sea and not always have to wait seven long days at sea for the highlight of a good meal, which was only available on Sundays.

Our tradition-conscious German Navy continues to cultivate this custom by eating cake together. Whether at sea or ashore, our soldiers are still eagerly awaiting Thursday!
