Schleswig-Holstein's maritime industry as a strategic location factor

The maritime industry is a key location factor for Schleswig-Holstein - but uncertain industrial policy conditions, geopolitical tensions and faltering approvals are jeopardising its competitiveness, says the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

A clear signal was sent at the 8th Maritime Parliamentary Evening: faster procedures, reliable framework conditions and targeted investments so that the maritime value chain remains stable and can grow.

Based on its geostrategic location, Schleswig-Holstein's maritime industry belongs to the industrial centre of Germany. Clear political guidelines are needed to secure this position. Competitiveness is created where reliable framework conditions, efficient decision-making processes and a modern infrastructure are guaranteed. The changed security policy situation emphasises the need for robust national industrial capacities. Stable supply chains, sovereign procurement channels and an efficient maritime industry are increasingly becoming security-relevant factors. Schleswig-Holstein needs targeted investments, resilient decision-making structures and a clear political prioritisation of maritime security technologies. Industrial, security and location policy must be consistently considered together.

The state government emphasises the special security policy and infrastructural role of the maritime industry. Fast, efficient decisions and international cooperation are crucial to support the maritime fleet modernisation of Germany and its allies. With initiatives such as the TechHUB SVI Nord, Schleswig-Holstein is also strengthening technology-based innovations in the security and defence sector. Efficient maritime value chains depend on resilient supply structures, reliable partnerships and predictable political framework conditions from.

Core demands of the IHK Schleswig-Holstein

In order to sustainably strengthen the maritime industry, the IHK Schleswig-Holstein is calling for, among other things, the acceleration of planning and approval procedures as well as digitalised and clear responsibilities. In addition, the infrastructure, including transport routes, quaysides and water access, urgently needs to be modernised. More planning security is needed for shipyards and suppliers through projects that are communicated at an early stage and reliably implemented. In addition, the immigration of skilled labour and training structures must be facilitated. Co-operation in naval shipbuilding must be strengthened, and stronger networking along the maritime value chain is also important. In particular, the financing of the removal of contaminated sites and munitions salvage and the development of corresponding shipyard capacities, which has been delayed again for years. According to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the aim is to demand the necessary framework conditions at federal and state level to enable an efficient and sustainable maritime industry.
