Methanol engines on the rise

Maritime Cluster Northern Germany presents a comprehensive market overview

Due to its high potential for decarbonising shipping and protecting the environment, methanol is well on its way to establishing itself as one of the most important fuel options alongside LNG and ammonia as well as bio-based fuels such as FAME. Decisions by major market players such as Maersk and X-Press Feeders to use methanol in new ships support this development. A few years ago, engines that could process methanol were virtually non-existent. Now, however, established engine manufacturers are increasingly opening up to this fuel and actively tapping into this market. In addition, more and more engines are being retrofitted or converted by specialised companies independent of the manufacturer before delivery to the end customer.

The large number of companies and institutions active in the field of methanol engines makes it increasingly difficult for players in the shipping industry to maintain an overview. For this reason, member companies of the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (MCN) wanted a market overview of all relevant players in the field of methanol combustion engines. The MCN then commissioned the engineering firm GasKraft Engineering to compile this overview.

The result is a comprehensive tabular overview of players who already offer, will offer or are researching marine engines as main or auxiliary units, as well as the most important engine data. No judgements are made in order to maintain neutrality. In addition to the key parameters of the engines presented, the overview also includes the fuel consumption figures researched at various load points, provided the data was available. In some cases, the data has been supplemented by mathematical estimates in order to provide as much information as is necessary at the basic design stage.

The market overview is aimed at decision-makers who are considering methanol as a marine fuel, as well as experts who want to create basic designs for ships and identify suitable technologies. The overview is also of interest to component suppliers who want to adapt their portfolio to the engines available on the market.

"The market for green fuels is on the move. Although the range of (soon-to-be) available methanol engines has grown considerably compared to previous years, it is still manageable enough to be presented in a clear overview," explains Henning Edlerherr, Project Manager at the MCN office in Lower Saxony. "This is likely to change rapidly over the next few years. In any case, the foundation stone has been laid by the engine manufacturers."

The Market Transparency Study Methanol Engines, prepared in the period from 17 October to 31 December 2023, was presented to the public for the first time at an online event on 8 April 2024. The data was compiled by the authors Prof. Dr Hinrich Mohr and Dr René Wolf, both from GasKraft Engineering, through extensive web research and visits to relevant specialist conferences and therefore represents a snapshot of the current and future methanol engine market at the end of 2023.
