Minister Pistorius visits the "Warnowwerft" naval arsenal in Rostock

Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius visited the Warnowwerft naval arsenal (MArs) in Rostock-Warnemünde on Thursday, 21 September 2023, to find out about the order, capacity utilisation and infrastructure.

The Bundeswehr took over the site of the former MV shipyards last summer. Instead of building cruise ships, naval vessels are now to be serviced here.

There is a video recording of the minister's speech at stern.de.

Against the backdrop of the frigate "Köln" (class 120, keel laid at the end of 1957, commissioned/decommissioned 15 April 1961/17 December 1982), which is used as a training hulk at the Naval Damage Control Training Centre in Neustadt and also needs occasional refreshing, the minister is shown in the original soundtrack (reproduced here in excerpt).

"We need military strength, we need deterrence capability, we need the ability to act. And of course this also includes focussing on the German navy, which plays an important role with its presence in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. But, often not focussed on by many, also in the Atlantic and Pacific. And our navy in particular can only reliably and continuously fulfil and master its tasks with its equipment if it is better equipped to do so. And the equipment is not all brand new. There are also ships that are getting on in years. And many deployments increase wear and tear."

Even if the Minister did not refer to this now very "old" frigate in his text, it is generally true that the former MV shipyard, as an established and efficient maintenance base in the Baltic Sea area, significantly increases the material operational readiness of the Navy's seagoing units and thus Germany's ability to defend its country and alliances. In future, parts of the German Navy's own ship and boat repairs will be carried out at the Naval Arsenal-Warnowwerft, thus significantly relieving the burden on the MArs at its main location in Wilhelmshaven.
Civil utilisation of additional areas

A few days ago, it was also announced that the Ministry of Defence had decided to release part of the naval arsenal in Warnemünde for industrial development so that offshore power generation technology can be built on the site of the former Warnowwerft shipyard in future. This decision was a long time in the making, as the German Armed Forces wanted to use the southern open space of the Arsenal for a NATO material store. Now, following the minister's official announcement during his visit to the Arsenal, the construction of conversion platforms for wind farms at sea is to begin. The Belgian company Smulders had already announced its interest in the site a year ago. At the same time, Economics Minister Habeck also announced that the converter platforms that are essential for wind farms will be built in Rostock in future.

Background:

The MArs is part of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) and is tasked with ensuring the operational readiness of the German Navy. In addition to ships and boats, the area of responsibility also includes the shore facilities and land-based units of the Navy, including naval schools, radio transmitting stations and ammunition depots. The core tasks are the planning and implementation of material maintenance measures above the level of troop maintenance as well as the repair of command and weapon deployment systems by the armoury operations. The service carries out all repair and maintenance work that cannot be carried out by the navy with on-board resources.
