F 123 with new radar equipment from Saab

Modernisation of the Brandenburg class

Saab today signed a contract with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) for the modernisation of the 123 class frigates. The Swedish defence company will supply new radar equipment, fire control systems and command and weapon deployment systems and integrate them on the ships. Work is due to begin this year and is expected to continue until 2030 for the four units.
The order is worth around 450 million euros. Saab is acting as general contractor. The shipbuilding work will be carried out by the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard, while Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH (ESG) is responsible for the logistics. The Combat Management System 9LV will be installed on the frigates. The Sea Giraffe 4A and Sea Giraffe 1X radars were selected as sensors. The Ceros 200 fire control radar with IFF and third-party systems are also used.

  1. That's crazy: the ships are to be retrofitted by 2030 and remain in service until 2040. However, the Sea-Lynx helicopter is to be replaced by the Sea-Tiger by 2030. However, this does not fit into the hangar of the F123. This leaves the U-Jagt frigate without a helicopter.????
