MV Werften delivers - future open

The Stralsund Shipyard of the MV shipyard group, which has been shaken by the pandemic, has delivered the CRYSTAL ENDEAVOUR, the first of originally three expedition cruise ships, to Crystal Expedition Cruises from Los Angeles. The ship has a long construction period behind it, which not only characterised the development of the MV Werften GmbHbut of the German shipbuilding industry.
The ship, which was commissioned in 2016 and will be delivered in August 2018, was initially planned at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven. This was taken over in 2015 by the Malaysian conglomerate Genting, which also owns the shipping company Crystal Cruises. After Genting also took over the three large shipyards in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund in spring 2016 and the MV Werften GmbH the construction was moved to the shipyard in Stralsund together with the two other planned ships of this type and delivery was postponed to 2019. Actual construction then began with the first steel cut in mid-January 2018. The keel was even laid on 21 August 2018 in the presence of the German Chancellor. However, production then dragged on, partly due to a lack of skilled labour and experience, according to the shipyard. The undocking planned for late summer 2019 had to be postponed, meaning that the newbuild could not be brought to the pier for final outfitting until the end of December 2019. On 20 March 2020, production of all current shipbuilding projects at MV Werften was finally suspended due to the consequences of the pandemic, meaning that the CRYSTAL ENDEAVOUR could only be completed thanks to bridging aid from the federal and state governments. Following successful sea trials in the Baltic Sea, the ship was finally christened and handed over on 26 June 2021 and set sail on her maiden voyage in mid-July. It travelled from Reykjavik around Iceland to Arctic waters.
According to the shipping company, the CRYSTAL ENDEAVOUR is the "largest and most spacious megayacht in the world". The shipyard calls it the first "luxury expedition yacht with ice class" built in Germany. And indeed, the 164.5 metre long and 23.4 metre wide 20,200 GT ship, which is interesting in every respect, has 100 suites measuring between 28 and 105 square metres and a 24-hour butler service for a maximum of 200 guests - the ratio of staff to passengers is one to one. Two helicopters, 18 Zodiac inflatable boats, 14 kayaks and a mini-submarine for six people are kept on board for expeditions. The propulsion system, specially developed for ice-going vessels, has a total output of 13 MW and comprises two Azipod units and a diesel-electric motor. There are several water treatment systems and an SCR exhaust gas purification system on board. If necessary, the vessel can be kept in position without anchoring using GPS and the bow thruster, which is intended to prevent damage in particularly sensitive areas of water, such as reefs. The FarSounder 1000 sonar technology enables far-sighted detection of marine life and underwater objects.
