The world's largest, but still unfinished cruise ship "Global One" has been sold to Disney Cruise Line - a company of The Walt Disney Company - and will be completed in Wismar, where it is located in the shipbuilding hall. This was announced at the shipyard on Thursday by the insolvency administrator of the MV Werften Group, Dr Christoph Morgen, partner in the nationwide law firm Brinkmann & Partner.
He explained: "Today is a very good day for the shipbuilders in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and for the maritime supply industry in northern Germany. Several hundred former and current employees of MV Werften, colleagues from Meyer Group and numerous suppliers will complete the impressive ship in Wismar over the next two years so that it can set sail as a sustainable family ship for Disney Cruise Line. As part of the design changes, the buyer is placing particular emphasis on sustainability and will therefore convert the ship to an environmentally friendly methanol propulsion system, among other things. I am also pleased about the signing of the contract because it confirms the outstanding work done by the employees of MV Werften to date and emphasises the importance and outstanding expertise that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has in shipbuilding."
The task now is to prepare for the restart of work on the ship's construction. It is planned that Meyer Werft will contribute its extensive expertise in the construction of complex and innovative cruise ships and that the ship will be completed by former and current employees of MV Werften and colleagues from Meyer Group over a construction period of two years.
