NATO Association visits Lübeck

The Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (NATO abbreviation SNMCMG1) will be visiting Lübeck from Friday, 30 May to Monday, 2 June 2025

The unit exercises in the Baltic Sea with a combination of mine defence measures and patrols. It is intended to strengthen the security of the Critical Underwater Infrastructure (CUI). Previously, the units were in Visby (Gotland, Sweden) and demonstrated NATO's continued presence in the Baltic Sea. These patrols demonstrate the Alliance's commitment to collective defence, deterrence and maritime security in an area where strategic awareness and unity among Allies is essential.

This visit provides an opportunity to strengthen relations between the allied navies and allows citizens to learn more about the capabilities and professionalism of the SNMCMG1 Task Force, especially mine units. "Such visits are important opportunities for the ship's crew to promote camaraderie and strengthen cohesion," explains Commander Erik Kockx, who has commanded Countermeasures Group 1 since January 2025.

The SNMCMG1 has three tasks:

  • Responding to emerging crises: The Task Group remains ready to respond quickly to new threats or developments in the region.
  • Supporting Operation Baltic Sentry: The Task Group actively contributes to this operation, which aims to improve situational awareness of maritime traffic flows in the Baltic Sea region, thus helping to prevent damage to critical underwater infrastructure.
  • Protection of critical underwater infrastructure and clearance of historical ordnance from the world wars
