Netherlands: Jules Verne's fiction 2.0

Six months ago, we reported on the "Nautilus" here. The submersible superyacht is a luxury project by Dutch boat builder "U-Boat Worx", which shines above water as a yacht with a pool and sun deck, and offers the legendary luxury of Jule Verne's fantastic fiction under water - only on the most modern level. All this can be read in the attached original article.

Now "U-Boat Worx" has teamed up with the Italian design studio "Officina Amare" to design the interior - virtually for the time being, of course. The mezzanine deck located in the forward underwater section offers plenty of cosy places with comfortable seating areas that provide a good view of the seascape and opportunities to relax, even in extended company. The individual living and sleeping cabins are located on the deck level behind, also with very spacious, side-facing views. Gold-coloured warm light creates a feel-good atmosphere inside that could hardly be more at odds with the cold blue of the sea outside.

All well and good - but you might want to hurry up building the yacht - otherwise there won't be any seas clean enough to enjoy the play of colours!

And the Nautilus will exist after all, but only as a luxury-class technology yacht. But even with the current drought of oligarchs on the market, it will certainly be possible to find a buyer or two for such a project!

The Dutch company Dutch U-Boat Worx has unveiled a 1,250-tonne underwater yacht for 25 million euros, which is to be named "Nautilus" at a good 37 metres in length. It should finally be able to realise all the dreams that have been developed in fantasy, film and on the drawing board since 1870, the year the adventure novel "20,000 Leagues Under Water" was published, but which could only be realised in rudimentary form or under very specific conditions. U-Boat Worx now says that they have succeeded in presenting a technically feasible, safe and extremely luxurious solution: "Nautilus" - diesel-electrically powered, submersible up to 200 metres, surface speed 9 knots - a maximum of half that under water, but only for 4 hours - but the idea is to enjoy the somewhat different world for up to four days in a suitably decelerated manner. In the central 50 m² dining and lounge area, four giant round portholes with a diameter of almost 4 metres provide an unobstructed view of the underwater world on both sides. The owner's cabin and a further four impressive guest compartments are designed to make living together in the confined space easier - and a crew of six is of course a major factor in this.

The lid of the "can" folds open and now forms the sun roof over a spacious sun deck with swimming pool, bar and table arrangement. There is also a cockpit from which the luxury object can be safely steered to the berth (with a water depth of at least 6.5 metres).

The watertight, electrically powered dinghy "Aronnax" stowed in the stern can of course do more: it serves as an underwater towing system for diving excursions outside the yacht. Everything has been thought of!

The "Nautilus" is expected to take 30 months to build. This means that in three years' time, we will know who has invested 25 million - and, depending on the equipment, has certainly added another small fortune.
