Netherlands: Maintenance contract for three support vessels

In September 2023, the Department of Material Maintenance (DMI) of the Dutch Ministry of Defence signed a five-year contract with the shipyard group Royal IHC, based in Kinderdijk, to carry out dock-related maintenance work on the two hydrographic survey vessels HNLMS "Snellius" (A802) and HNLMS "Luymes" (A803) and the submarine support and torpedo work vessel HNLMS "Mercuur" (A900).

Royal IHC is responsible for the project management, while the dock work is being carried out in cooperation with the Neptune Marine shipyard in neighbouring Hardinxveld-Giessendam.

The contract covers a total of five docking periods, twice for the twenty-year-old survey vessels (81 metres) and once for the torpedo workboat (1987, 64 metres), each with a predetermined scope of maintenance.

The maintenance work required at the end of the ships' three-year operating period includes various inspections of the hull and ship systems, regular material maintenance measures, renewal of the underwater coating, rectification of recognised operational problems and the regularly required class inspection (TÜV).

In November 2023, the first docking period began for HNLMS "Luymes" ("Snellius" class) as the first ship. On the morning of 31 January 2024, the ship was undocked and then returned to its home port in Den Helder, where the remaining maintenance work will be carried out.

The special thing about this first docking period is that it was successfully completed on time and within budget. This is good news and gives reason to expect that the second docking period, this time for HNLMS "Snellius", will also go according to plan.

Maintenance contracts with courageous and forward-looking maintenance planning are certainly the best prerequisite for long, low-repair service times and for avoiding hidden damage, especially for older ships, and are therefore recommended for imitation.
