New hall for marine projects: NVL Group invests in the Wolgast site

The north German NVL Group (Naval Vessels Luerssen) issued a press release at the weekend announcing the modernisation of its shipyard infrastructure at the Wolgast site. An investment of around 15 million euros in a dock shelter, for which the foundation stone has just been laid, will enable shipbuilding to be carried out regardless of the weather in future and set modern standards in environmental protection and occupational safety.

Together with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister of Economic Affairs Reinhard Meyer, NVL CEO Tim Wagner and Peene Werft Managing Director Harald Jaekel today placed a time capsule in the foundation to symbolise the laying of the foundation stone. With the completion of the roofing of the dry dock planned for the end of 2023, a wide range of shipbuilding work can be carried out without having to carry out time-consuming enclosures of boats and ships. This will also further reduce noise and emissions and offer employees significantly better working conditions.

The time capsule, which is embedded in the foundations in the old tradition to protect against evil spirits and possible construction irregularities, contains the construction plan, a current daily newspaper and a few coins. The total length of the 41 metre high and 37 metre wide hall being built above the dock is 135 metres and is equipped with two overhead travelling cranes, one of which has a lifting capacity of 160 tonnes, and two gable doors. For module construction, the cranes can travel as far as Shipbuilding Hall 1 opposite. The last 40 metres of the dock remain open so that externally manufactured large modules can be floated in.

The dock roofing, which is being realised mainly with regional construction companies and suppliers, is to be supported by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Development Institute with 800,000 euros. The state government in Schwerin sees the construction project as proof of the NVL Group's determined commitment to the state and the Wolgast site. The project contributes to securing industrial jobs and vocational training in the Vorpommern region, as shipbuilding is an industrial core for the state and remains of great importance in terms of both economic and employment policy.

Original quote from NVL:

"As a specialist in the construction of complex naval vessels and coast guard boats and as a long-standing partner of the German Navy, we have a responsibility to find constructive and shipbuilding solutions for this. To make this possible, we need not only clever minds but also shipyards with the best possible technical equipment. This is where we develop our products and where we build and test them. Our shipyards are the centrepiece of our Group - we invest accordingly in a targeted and needs-based manner. ... The new hall is designed to meet the requirements of current new construction and repair projects in terms of dimensions, craneage and other technical equipment. Consequently, we will integrate the new infrastructure into the construction of the new Class 126 frigates for the German Navy."
