New commander "DELTA"

Change of command on the corvette "Erfurt"

On 12 June 2023, Frigate Captain Axel Burmeister (41) handed over command of the crew "Delta" to Frigate Captain Max Berger (36). The ceremony took place on the corvette "Erfurt".

Frigate Captain Burmeister commanded the "Delta" crew for exactly two years, seven months and two days. During this time, the naval officer and his crew underwent several training phases under coronavirus conditions in preparation for their deployment to UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) at the beginning of 2022. He still remembers one event very clearly that was formative for the crew and even for the commander. "During the transit to the UNIFIL mission, we came across a refugee boat that was unable to manoeuvre. We coordinated the rescue of the refugees and were able to save around 170 people. Including over 50 children," says the commander. In future, Frigate Captain Burmeister will perform his duties on the Hohe Düne as Deputy Commander of the 1st Corvette Squadron.

For his successor, Frigate Captain Max Berger, taking command means a return to his military home. The naval officer previously held the post of S3 officer and deputy commander of the 1st corvette squadron. "I am delighted to be back on the Hohe Düne and to have swaying planks under my feet. After a long break at sea for the crew, it is now important to quickly pick up speed again and establish operational readiness," says the new commander.
