Navy's longest-serving sea captain retires
Klaus Heermeier joined the navy 47 years ago. Now he is handing over his last command to his successor. For three and a half years, he was in command of the Naval NCO School.
"The navy is the branch of the armed forces that knows how to deal with each other very well," he said, and it was always particularly important to the experienced officer to live a "sanction-free counselling of subordinates and superiors" and to support his subordinate soldiers as head of department.
His time as commander was characterised by Russia's attack on Ukraine and the coronavirus pandemic, among other things.
His successor is Captain Edgar Behrends, most recently Chief of Staff in Operational Flotilla 1 in Kiel, who was delighted "to be back at the Naval NCO School, to take on responsibility there and to further strengthen the role of the Navy's NCO corps". This needs to be honed and further developed, especially against the backdrop of the defined goal of being fit for war. Captain Edgar Behrends is looking forward to maintaining the good relations between the Naval NCO School and the town of Plön.
