Marine fuel suppliers stop supplying Russian ships in the Mediterranean region

No supply for Russian tankers

Marine fuel suppliers have stopped supplying Russian-flagged vessels at major European hubs, including Spain and Malta another blow to Moscow's exports.

The loss of access to refuelling stations in the Mediterranean poses major logistical problems for Russian oil tankers sailing from Baltic ports to Asia and also raises safety concerns as they could be stranded at sea with flammable cargo. The suspension of refuelling services is due to several factors, including what sources have called "self-sanctioning", where companies are trying to pre-empt the next wave of measures by refusing to enter into contracts with Russian companies. Payment problems due to banking restrictions have also led to complications in deals involving marine fuel, which is usually invoiced and paid for in US dollars.

ships flying the Russian flag in Malta, the British overseas territory of Gibraltar or neighbouring Algeciras in Spain - all important bunker or refuelling zones in the Mediterranean - cannot receive fuel. Malta does not allow ships flying the Russian flag to enter its harbours.
