Norway goes Indo-Pacific

Germany is not alone in wanting to play a greater role in the Indo-Pacific. The Norwegian Navy will take part in the Indo-Pacific voyage of an aircraft carrier group led by the Royal Navy scheduled for 2025. "This is a significant Norwegian contribution to ensuring security and the free use of the sea," said Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram during a visit to his British counterpart John Healey in London on 6 August 2024.

Gram went on to explain that developments in the Indo-Pacific region are becoming increasingly important for security in the world and are also receiving increased attention in NATO. Ultimately, the developments there would not remain without an impact on Norwegian security. "By participating in the UK-led aircraft carrier group, we will gain more insight and knowledge about the security situation in the region," said Gram.

In addition to a frigate (as yet unnamed) integrated into the aircraft carrier group, the task force supply ship "Maud" is to take part in parts of the Indo-Pacific voyage.
