In December 2024, the "Estlink 2" Baltic Sea cable, which supplies electricity from Finland to Estonia, was damaged by the anchor of the "Eagle S". It has now been repaired faster than planned and is back on the grid.
During the repair work with the help of a special ship, the damaged section of the approximately 170 kilometre long connection line was removed and replaced with a new cable approximately one kilometre long. The connection is fully functional and is now available on the electricity market again, according to the Estonian grid operator Elering.
The crude oil tanker "Eagle S", which is attributed to the Russian shadow fleet, was detained and searched by the Finnish authorities on suspicion of sabotage and espionage. marineforum.online/ reported in detail on 27 December 2024.
The ship was reportedly not insured at the time of the incident. Several crew members are being investigated for criminal offences. A port state control carried out by the Finnish authorities revealed several serious deficiencies, which had to be rectified before the "Eagle S" was allowed to continue its voyage at the beginning of March.
