Canada begins construction of the new River class. This is the Canadian Navy's largest and most complex procurement programme since the end of the Second World War.
Ottawa intends to acquire a total of 15 River-class destroyers to replace the four Iroquois-class destroyers (already decommissioned) and the 12 Halifax-class frigates still in service. The contract to build the first three units was formally awarded to Irving Shipbuilding, Inc. in Halifax on 8 March 2025. All ships of the new class will be named after important Canadian rivers,
