Russia: Frigate shoots down Ukrainian drone

The Russian Ministry of Defence announced yesterday (12 April 2022) that the Grigorovich-class frigate "Admiral Essen" (project 11356) had shot down a Ukrainian drone of the "Bayraktar" type with its "Shtil" anti-aircraft missiles off the west coast of the island of Crimea.

The navalised SA-N-7C/Gollum belongs to the Buk medium-range air defence family of the Russian armed forces. It is mounted in 12-place vertical silos on the newer units of the Russian Navy.

Frigates of the Black Sea Fleet

The four Grigorovich frigates built so far (six were planned) were built and equipped at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad (Königsberg) in the Russian exclave between Lithuania and Poland between 2010 and 2018. The construction of the frigates suffered certain delays because the planned Ukrainian gas turbines could not be delivered on time (irony of fate!). This type of ship is used exclusively by the Black Sea Fleet.

Russia Claims: Missile Shtil shot down Ukrainian Bayraktar TB2 near Crimea

Bayraktar is a Turkish-made UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) that does not fly very fast, but is successful and inexpensive. Ukraine is said to have contractually acquired up to 20 of these drones shortly before the start of hostilities. The Russian side claims to have already shot down two of these drones, but has probably had to accept countless successful strikes from the Ukrainian side. The attack on the landing ship convoy in Berdyansk and the destruction of the Alligator landing ship Saratov at the pier there is also attributed to one of these drones.

Kalibr cruise missile - salvo shot

Just a few days after the start of the war, the Russian Ministry of Defence made the video sequence of a quadruple launch of Kalibr land-based cruise missiles available on servers that are no longer accessible here. Nevertheless, this sequence can still be viewed via a Dominican news channel using the link provided.

Small battle corvettes of the Black Sea Fleet

According to the silhouette, the platform is a Buyan-M corvette (project 21631), four units of which (out of 12 built) are also assigned to the Black Sea Fleet of the Navy of the Russian Federation. Like the Grigorovich frigates, they are equipped with an 8-launch silo for cruise missiles of the type SS-N-30/Sagaris (NATO) or 3M14/Kalibr (Russian) with ranges of up to 1,350 nautical miles (2,600 km). The FK is almost 9 metres long, weighs up to 2.3 tonnes and achieves a cruising speed of Mach 0.8. The warhead carries an approx. 450 kg Hx load (fragmentation/scattering ammunition), but can also be equipped with nuclear weapons.

Where is the Russian navy?

It is currently assumed that the Russian units have positioned themselves seaward of the Ukrainian coast beyond artillery range in such a way that they can effectively intercept any cargo traffic to and from Ukrainian harbours. From these positions, they can carry out land target attacks with cruise missiles as required, as well as wait for suitable times for amphibious operations or their coastal support.
