Russian oil tankers are coming under increasing pressure due to the latest sanctions imposed by the USA, EU and the UK. Panama and Barbados have already cancelled several ships from their flag registers.

After Panama has already removed almost 70 ships from its register, Barbados is now following suit: The ship registry of the Caribbean state announced that 46 ships from the Russian shadow fleet would be flagged out. The owners have been asked to take up the country's flag due to new British sanctions.

Experts are calling for other flag states to follow the example of Panama and Barbados.
The ships that have been removed from the flag list are now looking for alternative flag states. Countries such as Tanzania and São Tomé and Príncipe are being favoured. Analyses show that the use of such flags makes it easier to circumvent international sanctions. Efforts are therefore being made within the EU and Western countries to restrict these practices through stricter regulations for third countries. Efforts to curb the Russian shadow fleet are therefore continuing.
