After four days, the Indonesian naval submarine has been found. This was announced by the army chief of the Southeast Asian country. The 53 people on board are dead. The almost 60 metre long submarine had lost contact with the fleet during an exercise early on Wednesday morning. At the time, it was around 95 kilometres north of Bali. The navy reported the discovery of objects on Saturday. A total of 21 ships and 5 aircraft took part in the search, including an Australian warship and a special American aircraft.
According to Indonesian sources, 53 sailors were on board the 40-year-old boat. In addition to the regular crew, the commander of the Indonesian submarine flotilla, Colonel Harry Setiawan, is also said to have been on board. The last time the Nanggala was overhauled in South Korea for two years and returned to the fleet in 2012. Before a planned torpedo shot, the crew asked for permission to dive at around 04:30. Shortly afterwards, the radio connection is said to have been interrupted. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. An Indonesian survey vessel located the submarine at a depth of around 800 metres. A salvage ship from Singapore, which only arrived on Sunday morning, then found the wreck with the help of a diving robot. It had broken into three pieces
The 1395-tonne fighter submarine was built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel at the end of the 1970s. A general overhaul was completed in South Korea in 2012. It was one of a total of five submarines in the Indonesian Navy.
