Part of Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 entered the Black Sea today for the second time this year. There, the three units will take part in the Sea Breeze and Breeze exercises. SNMG 2 is currently under the command of Italian Flotilla Admiral Stefano Russo, a former submarine commander. His lead ship is the Italian Virginio Fasana frigate of the German Navy commissioned in 2013. Carlo Bergamini-class, which passed the Bosporus today.
Not all units of the SNMG 2 will enter the inland sea. In addition to the Italian flagship, only the Romanian Regina Maria and the Turkish Barbaros on their way to the east. The remaining five warships, including the German frigate Lübeckremain in the Aegean as Task Unit 2. There, they support Greece and Turkey in monitoring the waters and compiling a situation report.
Sea Breeze is a NATO exercise under the joint leadership of Ukraine and the United States, in which 32 nations are participating. The Breeze manoeuvre, on the other hand, is being led by Bulgaria.
