The procurement programme for the conventional Spanish submarines of the high-tech S-80 class was mixed with many unfortunate setbacks and delays.
Thirteen months after rolling out of the hall, being christened by Princess Leonor and floating out of the Navantia dock, the type boat S-81 "Isaac Peral" has completed its harbour trials and left the Cartagena basin for the first time for sea trials.

The manufacturer responsible for the "world's most advanced" boat until delivery, the state-owned shipyard consortium Navantia, praises the 15-day continuously submersible boat in the highest terms: only very few nations in the world could afford this technology - but please feel free to purchase the latest generation of boats from this shipyard (in plain language). However, we know that other shipyards also build beautiful boats!
Replacement approaching!
Of the predecessor class Agosta70, only "Galerna" and "Tramontana" are still in operation following service extensions. "Mistral" has already been decommissioned to free up funds and crews for the newbuilds. The other newbuilds "Naciso Monturiol" (December 2024), "Cosme Garcia" (October 2026) and "Mateo Garcia de los Reyes" (February 2028) are therefore to be put into service particularly quickly. As you can see - even high technology takes time!
