Spock 1 - Germany's new eye in space

Satellite-based situational awareness: Spock 1 in action

The German Armed Forces have awarded a major contract in the space sector in a remarkably short space of time. The German-Finnish joint venture Rheinmetall Iceye Space Solutions, which was only founded in November 2025 and is based in Neuss, was commissioned by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support to provide space-based reconnaissance data. The contract includes exclusive access to a constellation of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellites and was awarded without a public tender.
