Sun brings parcels

Deutsche Post will transport parcels in Berlin using a solar-powered boat. It is to be used on the River Spree.

It is a Deutsche Post test, the company announced on its website. The ship will transport hundreds of consignments from Spandau south harbour to Westhafen every day - emission-free and noiseless. The electrically powered ship is 10.50 metres long and 2.50 metres wide. It has an output of 5 kW and can travel at speeds of up to 6.5 knots (approx. 12 km/h). The photovoltaic system is located on the roof of the ship. When the sun is not shining, the energy is stored in batteries. These supply the ship with power for six to eight hours. "The ship has a propulsion power of five kilowatts and can therefore reach speeds of up to twelve kilometres per hour," writes Deutsche Post.

The pilot project could be extended to Neukölln and Mariendorf after a successful test. Talks with the city of Berlin are promising. This involves moorings and the passage of the locks.
